What GSTR-2B is
GSTR-2B is the statement GSTN drafts for each registered taxpayer from their suppliers' GSTR-1 and IFF filings and import data. It is generated on the 14th of the following month and does not change afterwards. Because it is static, it is the document you reconcile against, and the document a notice quotes.
Why it matters for ITC
Since January 2022, input tax credit is available only for invoices that appear in GSTR-2B (Section 16(2)(aa), Rule 36(4)). An invoice the client holds but the supplier has not reported is credit you cannot take yet. An invoice in 2B that never reached the client's books is credit they were entitled to and have not claimed. Both are found the same way: by matching, line by line.
The three lists
In 2B, not in the books. The supplier reported it, the client never recorded it. Most often a bill that stayed in a drawer or a WhatsApp chat. The fix is to book it; the credit is real and the month it appears in 2B is the month to claim.
In the books, not in 2B. The client has the invoice, the supplier has not filed or filed late. Do not claim it this month. Chase the supplier; it will appear in a later 2B, and you claim it then. Claiming early invites a mismatch notice and interest.
Different. Same invoice, different value, rate or date on the two sides. Usually a typing slip on one side. Decide which side is right, correct it, and if the supplier is wrong ask them to amend in their next GSTR-1.
How the work actually goes
Collect the client's documents, extract line items, pull 2B, match, decide, compute, file. Done by hand, the matching step is where the afternoon goes. In AawazAI for CAs it is the step the workspace does: upload the folder, the AI reads it, GSTR-2B is pulled from GSTN, and you get the three lists with anything uncertain in a review queue. You clear the queue, check the summary and press Confirm & File. How the workspace works.

Questions
About GSTR-2B
What is GSTR-2B?
GSTR-2B is the auto-drafted statement of input tax credit that GSTN generates for every registered taxpayer each month, from what their suppliers reported in GSTR-1, IFF and import data. It is static once generated, which is what makes it usable for reconciliation.
When is GSTR-2B generated?
On the 14th of the month following the tax period, after the GSTR-1 and IFF due dates (11th and 13th) have passed. A supplier who files late pushes their invoices into the next month's 2B.
Can I claim ITC on an invoice that isn't in my 2B?
Not safely. Since 1 January 2022, Section 16(2)(aa) and Rule 36(4) restrict input tax credit to invoices that appear in GSTR-2B. If you have the invoice but it isn't in 2B, the supplier hasn't reported it yet: follow up, and claim in the month it appears.
What is the difference between GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B?
2A is dynamic and changes as suppliers file; 2B is a monthly snapshot. Reconcile against 2B, because that is the document the ITC rule points to and the one a notice will quote.
How does AawazAI for CAs do this?
Open a workspace for the client and period, upload whatever the client sent (bill photos, PDFs, bank statements, Tally or accounting exports), and the workspace pulls GSTR-2B from GSTN and matches line by line. You get three lists: in 2B but not in the books, in the books but not in 2B, and different. Anything needing judgement lands in a review queue, and nothing is filed until you press Confirm & File.
